Mexican Oregano is not to be confused with traditional Oregano (Mediterranean) which is in the mint family. Mexican Oregano is actually a shrub in the verbena family and is native to South America. The aroma and flavor will be “somewhat” familiar, but it has a noticeable citrus character, like lemon verbena.
Try it in moles and other sauces, in stews and in soups such as pozole. Of course, it is wonderful added to long-simmered bean dishes.
It will NOT work in Italian tomato sauces!
