Garam Masala, from garam ("hot") and masala (a mixture of spices) is a blend of ground spices, originating from the Indian subcontinent, common in cuisines from the Indian subcontinent Mauritius and South Africa. It is used alone or with other seasonings. The word garam refers to "heating the body" in the Ayurvedic sense of the word, as these spices are believed to elevate body temperature in Ayurvedic medicine.

While it sounds like a curry, the difference in the recipes of the spice blends is the quantity of each spice used. Garam Masala powder contains stronger pungent spices like cloves, cinnamon, cardamom compared to curry powder, which have mild spices like turmeric, cumin, coriander and fenugreek.

TSM’s House Blend is a balance between the two. It is not as hot as a curry and not quite as sweet as a traditional Garam Masala. Delish!

Garam masala is used with many meat and fish dishes. You will also find it in vegetarian and vegan dishes and soups based on legumes and vegetables.

Ingredients: fennel seed, cinnamon, caraway seed, black pepper, cloves and cardamom.
